Climate policy is becoming industrial policy: the balance-sheet view

Energy systems, trade and technology are reshaping the vocabulary of climate economics.

Original editorial analysis. Energy systems, trade and technology are reshaping the vocabulary of climate economics.

The context

TIME journalist Justin Worland has argued that climate questions increasingly appear in discussions of energy demand, investment and competitiveness, rather than in environmental language alone.

Our analysis

For company leaders, that changes the order of decisions. Before publishing ambitious targets, boards need to establish exposure to fuel prices, supply interruptions, capital expenditure and regulation. Resilience becomes a financial question as well as an environmental one. Public claims should be tied to independently understandable metrics.

What to watch

Look for quantified investment plans, verifiable emissions accounting and realistic timetables. When numbers are absent, even persuasive rhetoric is hard to evaluate.
