Budget 2026 gives £120 million to the AI Security Institute and £40 million to a new unit tackling “rogue” AI agents. £154 million will go to cyber defence. This matters for businesses: according to a government survey, 43% of UK firms identified a breach or attack over the year.
The UK will lead the development of three new systems for uncrewed underwater vehicles under the AUKUS pact with Australia and the US. A sonar, an anti-submarine sensor and a non-kinetic system are due to join the three countries’ fleets from 2027. The government stresses that the work creates jobs for firms in England.
The HMICFRS inspectorate examined cyber security in police forces and fire and rescue services in England and Wales. The biggest risks are old systems, weak passwords, no MFA and external IT suppliers. The report makes 13 recommendations, and small businesses make the same mistakes.
