The UK will lead the next stage of work on advanced undersea sensors under the AUKUS pact. This is the security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Ministry of Defence announced it on 27 October 2026.
It concerns three systems fitted to uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs). The first is a synthetic aperture sonar, which builds a detailed picture of the seabed and objects underwater. The second is a deployable sensor for detecting submarines. The third is a so-called non-kinetic effector, a system that works without firing projectiles.
According to the government, the systems will help to monitor large areas of sea and protect undersea infrastructure, such as cables and pipelines. They are due to be available in the three countries’ fleets from 2027.
The announcement closed a week of testing during the Maritime Big Play exercise in San Diego. The UK led the anti-submarine warfare strand there. It sent 13 uncrewed surface vessels, 2 training targets and 4 underwater gliders from six companies.
Minister Luke Pollard noted that large and small British firms are working on the project, including in Frome, Basingstoke and Dorchester. The government points out that the defence investment plan provides for £298 billion of spending over four years.
What it means for you
For most families this is distant news. But for engineers, programmers, electronics specialists and technicians it is a signal that the defence and maritime sector in the UK will be looking for people. For small firms it is a chance of contracts in the supply chain: machining, electronics, software, testing. Protecting undersea cables also matters for the internet and energy we use every day.
Our assessment
This is a concrete step, not just a declaration. There is a deadline – 2027 – and the systems are named. The topic is close to Poland, because the Baltic also has cables and gas pipelines that need protecting. British experience with maritime drones may in time feed into cooperation with allies in Europe. For now, however, it is a project of the three AUKUS countries.
