Marks & Spencer has opened its first recruitment drive for a fully automated fashion distribution centre in Lichfield, which opens next year. There are more than 70 vacancies to start with, and eventually around 600 people will work there. Recruitment for a new food store in the town will follow soon.
The government and Rolls-Royce have signed an agreement to build a new generation of aircraft engines in the UK. The joint £2.5bn programme is to support 3,300 jobs until 2029 and create tens of thousands of new jobs in the following decades.
According to BTG’s Red Flag Alert report, 738,144 British businesses are in significant financial distress – the most since 2004. Most are in support services, construction and property. However, the number of firms in critical distress fell by 20.7%. Businesses owe £27.3bn in tax arrears.
From 9 November 2026, you will only be able to renew a UK patent after logging in to an Intellectual Property Office (IPO) account. You will no longer be able to do it together with a trade mark and design. The old Web Filing system will stay open longer, probably until early December.
The Commons business committee is examining whether government export support programmes and UK Export Finance help small firms sell abroad. Businesses, including Polish ones, can send their views by 13 November. It is a rare chance to tell MPs about real export problems, including to the EU.
Defra wants to phase out stunning pigs with high concentrations of CO2 in British abattoirs and replace it with argon or automated electrical stunning. The consultation runs until 21 December 2026. The change will affect meat plants, their staff, and suppliers of equipment and gases.
HMRC’s October bulletin reminds employers that November’s PAYE payment must arrive by 20 November, because 22 November is a Sunday. From April 2027 company cars and medical cover move into payroll, and from 30 October firms must actively prevent harassment at work.
