The Student Loans Company has now received more than 1.6 million refund requests through its online service. In the 2025/26 tax year, 416,400 people recovered a total of £97.6m in over-repaid instalments. We explain who can get a refund and what to remember before applying.
HMRC may get the power to collect unpaid tax directly from bank and savings accounts, including for small debts. According to The Times, the change is to appear in the Budget on 28 October. Today the threshold is a debt of £1,000, and at least £5,000 must remain in the accounts.
