On Thursday the Met Office published its forecast for the coming weekend. For many people the weekend will start with fog. During the day the fog should clear and sunshine will break through.
Saturday is Halloween. In the evening and overnight it will be wet in the north-west of Great Britain. Elsewhere it is expected to be largely dry. Forecasters warn, however, that patches of dense fog will form again overnight. The forecast is presented by Honor Criswick.
On Wednesday, in its 10-day trend, the Met Office signalled the end of the run of storms and the arrival of high pressure. On Thursday afternoon the Met Office website showed no weather warnings for the coming days.
What it means for you
If you are driving on Saturday morning, expect poorer visibility. Fog slows traffic on motorways and local roads. Families taking children trick-or-treating in the evening should stay dry in most areas. In the north-west it is worth taking rain jackets. Transport and courier firms should plan morning runs with time to spare.
Our assessment
After several windy weeks this is a calmer weekend. Fog is dangerous, though, because it forms suddenly, often at night and around dawn. After the clocks changed it gets dark earlier, so children in costumes are harder to see. We think a reflector or a torch is a good addition to any outfit on Saturday.
What to do
- Check the hourly forecast and any warnings on the Met Office website.
- In fog, drive more slowly, leave a bigger gap and use dipped headlights – the rules are in the Highway Code.
- For Halloween, give children reflectors, a torch and a warm layer under their costume.
