On 20 October 2026 the Scottish Government reminded families expecting a baby that they can receive more than £2,600 in support during pregnancy and the child’s first year. The figure applies to a family expecting a second child who applies from the 4th week of pregnancy and receives all benefits until the child’s first birthday.
What makes up the £2,643.15
- Best Start Foods in pregnancy: £196 (£5.60 a week for 35 weeks).
- Best Start Foods in the baby’s first year: £582.40 (£11.20 a week).
- Pregnancy and Baby Payment: £398.35 as a one-off for a second or subsequent child.
- Scottish Child Payment: £1,466.40 in the first year (£28.20 a week).
The amount depends on the family’s circumstances. Families receiving Universal Credit or certain other benefits can qualify.
When to apply
- Best Start Foods – as soon as you know you are pregnant.
- Pregnancy and Baby Payment – from the 24th week of pregnancy.
- Scottish Child Payment – after the baby is born.
What it means for you
If you are on Universal Credit and expecting a baby, you may be entitled to this money. The benefits are not paid automatically – you have to apply. Every week of delay with Best Start Foods is money lost.
Editorial comment
Scotland gives families more than the rest of the UK, but this information rarely reaches the Polish community in Polish. If you know someone who is expecting a baby, send them this article.
