Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański spoke on Monday 26 October at the 4th Polish-German Economic Forum in Warsaw, organised by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH). Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche, also attended.
Domański said Europe must learn from the past and that “in no scenario is there ever a return to business as usual with Russia”. He stressed that Poland will not accept a return to Russian raw materials, including Russian gas. He called for an end to “economic naivety”, less bureaucracy and the building of competitive energy markets.
The forum took place on the 35th anniversary of the 1991 treaty on good neighbourliness and friendly cooperation.
What it means for you
- Businesses: Germany is Poland’s largest trading partner – the direction of both countries’ energy policy affects energy prices and production costs.
- Households: decisions about Europe’s gas sources feed through to bills, including in the UK, where gas prices depend on the European market.
Our assessment
It is a clear signal to Berlin at a time when some EU states (Hungary, Slovakia) still buy Russian energy. It is worth watching whether Germany responds just as unequivocally.
