UK's first digital gilt edges closer as Bank of England approves HSBC–LSEG link

The Bank of England has approved a link between HSBC and LSEG platforms through which investors will buy DIGIT, the UK's first government bond recorded on a distributed ledger. Pilot issuance is expected by the end of March 2027. It is not a cryptocurrency and, for now, not a retail product.

The UK is a step closer to issuing its first government bond that exists only in digital form, on a distributed ledger. HM Treasury said the Bank of England has approved a link between HSBC and London Stock Exchange Group platforms through which investors will buy the new instrument. The pilot issuance of DIGIT is expected by the end of the first quarter of 2027.

What is DIGIT

DIGIT (Digital Gilt Instrument) is a short-dated gilt that is created and recorded on a digital ledger from the outset, with on-chain settlement. It will be issued within the Digital Securities Sandbox, a regulator-supervised environment for digital securities, and sits outside the government’s main debt management programme.

According to HM Treasury’s announcement of 2 November, the Bank of England has approved what it called a world-first link between two Digital Securities Depositories: HSBC Orion on the issuer side and LSEG on the investor side. Investors will be able to access the bond through either platform. Markets Media notes that this should reduce fragmentation between digital platforms.

The Treasury also gave specific roles to the six banks chosen in October: Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest and RBC Capital Markets. HSBC handles documentation and settlement, among other tasks, while NatWest and Morgan Stanley take on a new “Platform Coordinator” role, helping investors connect to their chosen infrastructure. Economic Secretary to the Treasury Lucy Rigby KC MP said the UK was “another step closer” to issuing its first digitally native government bond.

The government has not disclosed the size of the issuance.

Is it a cryptocurrency?

No. The distinction matters, because the word “blockchain” is often used as cover for scams. DIGIT is government debt, the same kind of obligation as a conventional gilt, only recorded and settled using new technology. It is not a token you can buy in a crypto app and has nothing to do with bitcoin.

What it means for Poles in the UK

Our view: tokenisation is moving from private-sector experiment to the heart of the financial system, but for now it concerns institutions, not small savers.

The evidence: the project is run by the government and the Bank of England, with distribution handled by six major banks. The pilot is short-dated and takes place in a supervised sandbox. The announcement does not envisage selling the bond directly to retail investors.

Practical takeaways:

  • Be wary of offers. If someone online or on the phone offers “UK government digital bonds” or “gilt tokens” with high returns, it is almost certainly a scam. Check the firm on the FCA Register.
  • For IT and finance firms it signals growing demand for skills in distributed ledgers, settlement and regulatory compliance.
  • For investors, conventional gilts remain available through traditional channels such as a broker or investment platform.

The first issuance will show whether digital settlement is faster and cheaper. If so, the technology may eventually reach the wider market.
