TIMECO2 Planet Portfolio: the four pillars of a climate plan for every business. Explained in plain English

Removing CO2 from the air, cutting emissions, protecting forests and backing innovation – these are the four project categories in Planet Portfolio, a TIMECO2 programme from TIME magazine. We explain how it works and what a small Polish business in the UK can take from it.

TIMECO2 is a TIME magazine initiative that shows how business can act for the climate – and what it gains from doing so. One of its programmes is Planet Portfolio: a set of climate projects that companies can support.

What it is about – in brief

The TIMECO2 film contains a line that sums up the programme well: the climate crisis and the nature crisis are the crises of our time, and businesses of every size have an important role to play. First, every company should cut its own emissions. But alongside that it should also support the planet – and that is what Planet Portfolio is for.

The four pillars

  1. Removing CO2 from the atmosphere (Carbon Dioxide Removal) – e.g. reforestation and carbon capture technologies.
  2. Cutting CO2 emissions (Emissions Reduction) – projects that prevent new emissions from being produced.
  3. Protecting carbon stocks (Carbon Stock Protection) – protecting forests and ecosystems that already store carbon.
  4. Innovation and accelerators (Innovation & Accelerators) – support for new climate solutions.

TIMECO2 says these four categories are the essential components of any climate plan.

What it means for you

  • Small business: start with your own emissions – energy, transport, waste. This often means lower bills too.
  • Contracts with large companies: they increasingly ask suppliers about their climate policy. A simple four-step plan helps win tenders.

Our assessment

The “own emissions first, then support the planet” approach is fair and easy to understand. For small businesses the most important step is the first one – saving energy – because it pays off straight away.
