Blackpool, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Wrexham are competing for the title of UK City of Culture 2029. The winner will receive £10 million, and each finalist at least £125,000 to develop its bid. The result will be announced in early 2027. We explain what it means for residents, visitors and local businesses.

The government has announced the final four in the competition for UK City of Culture 2029. Competing for the title are Blackpool, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Wrexham. They were chosen from nine longlisted bidders. The list also included Inverness-Highland, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and Swindon.

The winner will receive £10 million for its cultural programme. Each finalist is guaranteed at least £125,000 to develop its bid. Earlier, each of the nine longlisted bidders received a £60,000 grant. The result is due to be announced in early 2027.

Previous holders of the title are Derry-Londonderry, Hull, Coventry and Bradford. Bradford’s 2025 programme included more than 6,500 events. The competition is run by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), led by Lisa Nandy.

What it means for you

If you live in or near one of these places, in 2029 you could have hundreds of concerts, exhibitions and festivals on your doorstep. For families, that means cheaper outings and activities for children. For visitors, it is a good reason to see places that rarely make the sightseeing list.

For small businesses, including Polish ones, it is a chance to win work: catering, construction, transport, security, printing, stage technology and creative services. Programmes like this attract visitors and investment to a city.

Our assessment

We will only know the result in 2027, but the four places will already be looking for partners and events to show the judges. Bradford’s example shows that a year of culture is not just one festival but thousands of events and orders. Businesses that come forward early have a better chance.

What to do

  • For an autumn trip, consider one of the finalists – Blackpool with its promenade and tower, Sheffield with its Winter Garden, Wrexham in north Wales or Milton Keynes with its centre and parks.
  • If you run a business in these areas, check the websites of the local councils and cultural institutions – that is where information about partners and volunteering will appear.
