On 28 October 2026 the Department for Transport updated its list of countries where the UK Blue Badge parking card can be used. The new addition: the UK card is recognised in Italy.
According to the same list, the UK Blue Badge is also recognised in Poland. The same applies in the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Malta, Latvia and Slovakia, among others. Luxembourg and Romania accept non-EU cards.
In some countries the rules are limited. In Lithuania non-EU cards are accepted only in some regions. Slovenia may not recognise a card issued outside the EU. In Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands, recognition is decided by local authorities.
The government reminds travellers that even in countries that recognise the card, parking rules can vary from place to place. Some countries also require a local parking notice to be displayed alongside the Blue Badge.
What it means for you
If you or a member of your family has a Blue Badge, you can take it with you on a trip to Poland or Italy. This makes parking easier when visiting family and on holiday. You must, however, follow local signs and rules.
Our assessment
This is good news for disabled people and their families, as Italy is a popular destination. The list can change, though, so it is worth checking before every trip. Do not assume that UK rules apply everywhere in the same way.
What to do
- Before you travel, check your destination on the list: GOV.UK – Using a Blue Badge in Europe.
- Make sure your badge is valid for the whole trip.
- On arrival, ask at a tourist information centre or local authority about local parking rules.
