On Tuesday 27 October, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting and Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the “Warsaw Defence Plan” in Warsaw. It is the first phase of cooperation under the UK–Poland Security and Defence Partnership Treaty.

The plan covers sea, land, air, cyberspace and industry. Its aim is to deter Russia on Europe’s Eastern flank.

The two countries will work together on next-generation air defence missiles. They will also jointly develop drones and counter-drone systems, including to protect people and critical infrastructure. They will deepen cooperation on the cyber security of military and civilian sites.

The British Type 31 frigate and the Polish Miecznik are built from a common design. The navies will share lessons from their construction. There will be more joint exercises in the Baltic.

BAE Systems and Poland’s Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ, Polish Armaments Group) will expand large-calibre ammunition production. Industry in both countries is also to cooperate on training and workforce exchange. The plan builds on Poland’s earlier purchase of the Narew air defence system from MBDA UK.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, a Coalition of the Willing exercise involving thousands of personnel will take place in Poland next month. It is intended to prepare a multinational force for Ukraine. Streeting called Poland one of the UK’s closest allies.

What it means for you

For Polish businesses in the UK, this is a signal that the market for supplying the defence industry in both countries is growing: electronics, logistics, IT, training, parts. Workers with technical experience may find more vacancies at defence firms and their subcontractors. For families, it is above all a sign that London and Warsaw are working more closely on the region’s security.

Our assessment

The announcement gives no amounts, job numbers or deadlines. It is more a roadmap than ready contracts. Still, we believe joint production of ammunition and drones will quickly turn into orders for smaller suppliers. Anyone who wants to benefit should start preparing now.
