Montrose: an offshore wind factory will create 80 jobs, with 100 more possible

A plant making components for floating wind turbine foundations will be built at the Port of Montrose. The port is also set to serve one of the largest planned wind farms in the world.

Offshore wind farm

Subsea Micropiles of Westhill, Aberdeenshire, will invest more than £5m in a plant at the Port of Montrose. Around 80 jobs are to be created (Scottish Enterprise says 81). The investment is backed by public bodies: Scottish Enterprise awarded a £1.45m Regional Selective Assistance grant, and the Scottish National Investment Bank invested £6.7m.

At the same time SSE Renewables named Montrose as the preferred location for an operations and maintenance base for the planned Berwick Bank B wind farm. The base is expected to create around 100 jobs and also serve the Seagreen and Inch Cape farms. No final decision on the base has been taken.

The investments were announced by First Minister John Swinney on 28 September 2026. They are part of the government’s £500m programme for ports and the offshore wind supply chain.

Editorial comment

This is a good example of how the Scottish model of investment support works: a private company brings capital, and a public bank and development agency add funds. For the Angus region it means concrete jobs, and for local service firms potential orders. It is worth separating the certain from the planned, though: the factory has been announced, while the SSE base is for now a “preferred location”.

What to do

  • Job seekers in Angus and Aberdeenshire: watch for vacancies at Subsea Micropiles and SSE Renewables. Welding and manufacturing skills and offshore certificates are useful.
  • Local service firms (transport, construction, catering, cleaning): join the supply chain through Scottish Enterprise and offshore wind supplier databases.
  • Businesses planning investment: check whether you qualify for Regional Selective Assistance – a grant for projects that create jobs.
