Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney is visiting India on 20–27 October 2026 : Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The Scottish Government announced it on 20 October. The delegation includes food and drink businesses, among them Salmon Scotland. The government also names higher education and tourism as areas of cooperation.
Before leaving, Swinney visited a cold store at Heathrow Airport. According to the Scottish Government, Scottish salmon worth about £300 millionis shipped through Heathrow every year. Salmon Scotland says Scottish salmon reaches customers in 50 countries. Its chief executive Tavish Scott said opening up the Indian market as tariffs are removed is good news. The government did not give tariff rates in its statement.
Editorial comment
Many Poles work in Scottish fish processing plants, cold stores and transport firms. More exports to India could mean steadier orders and jobs. For now, though, this is a mission and talks, not signed contracts. We will see concrete results after the delegation returns.
What to do
- If you export food, check the current rules and tariffs for India on gov.uk.
- Ask Scottish Development International about support for exporters and trade fairs in India.
- Logistics and cold-chain firms: check whether you can handle shipments to Heathrow.
