The Ministry of Justice is expanding Child Focused Courts, a new way of handling child arrangements cases after parents separate. From 17 November 2026 it will cover areas including Merseyside, Lancashire and Northumbria. In West Yorkshire cases now finish 12 weeks faster on average. All of England and Wales – by March 2029.
The Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) has given the council of the London borough of Haringey its lowest grade, C4. The inspection found large backlogs of repairs, including damp and mould, and almost 4,000 overdue fire-safety actions. We explain what it means for tenants and how to pursue repairs effectively.
HM Land Registry has launched two consultations. It wants to simplify registration fees, including for transfers without payment and for registering a mortgage, and to give everyone free access to maps of land ownership in England and Wales. Responses can be submitted until 22 December 2026.
Defence ministers Wes Streeting and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz agreed in Warsaw the first phase of cooperation under the UK–Poland defence treaty. It covers air defence, drones, cyber security, the Baltic and greater ammunition production by BAE Systems and Poland’s PGZ.
In its evening forecast the Met Office shows a divided country: showers and blustery winds in the north and west, and a dry, clear night in the south-east. On Wednesday morning rain will cover northern England and Wales, and overnight temperatures will range from 7 to 12°C.
Since 26 October, Respect Orders have applied in England and Wales to adult perpetrators of anti-social behaviour. A court can ban them from the town centre or drinking in parks, or impose a curfew. Breaching an order can lead to arrest and up to 2 years in prison.
On Tuesday 27 October the House of Commons will consider at second reading a bill on removing dangerous cladding from residential buildings in England. Owners of blocks 11 metres and taller will have a legal duty to assess and remediate, and leaseholders are not supposed to pay for the work.
The Met Office is forecasting another round of rain and strong winds on Tuesday. In the most exposed parts of Scotland gusts could reach 70mph, and south-east England will wake up to rain. Check the warnings before setting off for work and school.
Storm Boelo hit Scotland hardest on Sunday. More than 82,000 homes lost power, the A82, A83 and A75 and several rail lines were closed, and a man died in Dumfries and Galloway. The Met Office warns of further strong winds on Monday and Tuesday.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham wants an “honest discussion” about restoring free movement of people between the UK and the EU. He rules out the euro and Schengen, and will set out options around the summit in Brussels on 20 November. Current visa and settled status rules are unchanged.
