The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is launching a study of tumble dryers sold in the United Kingdom. The reason: dryers often appear in house fire notifications as a possible cause.
The office will examine appliances across price points and from different manufacturers. The study will cover three types: heat-pump, condenser and vented dryers (with a hose leading outside). OPSS says the report will not name the brands of the appliances examined.
As part of the study, the office wants to assess, among other things, dryer components and design, possible ignition sources and fire-spread pathways, fire safety features, the supply chain and whether the appliances can be repaired.
OPSS is asking manufacturers, repairers, experts and other interested parties to submit data and evidence. The deadline is 1 December 2026. The results may inform future regulation, enforcement and standards.
What it means for you
For now nothing changes in shops or in your home. This is the start of a study, not a ban or a recall. But it is a good moment to check your own dryer. For Polish firms that repair household appliances and for retailers, it is a signal that new requirements may appear in a few months.
Our assessment
It is good that the office is starting with data and testing rather than hasty decisions. It also matters that the study will cover repairability – this affects family budgets and small repair businesses. Any changes to the rules, however, will take until next year at the earliest.
What to do
- Clean the lint filter after every load and do not leave the dryer running while you sleep or are out of the house.
- Register your appliance so that the manufacturer can notify you of any safety action: Register My Appliance.
- Check whether your model is subject to a recall: GOV.UK – product safety alerts and recalls.
- If your firm holds data on dryer faults, you can send it to OPSS (details in the source below).
