COMMENT | A Polish business in the UK loses not because of the rules, but because of the last day

Companies House, CBAM, the Budget. The deadlines have been known for months, yet many business owners will still learn about them from a penalty.

Chess pieces on a chessboard

Over the next month Polish business owners in the UK face several important deadlines. On 17 November the identity verification transition period at Companies House ends. From January 2027 the UK carbon border tax begins. On Wednesday we will see the Budget. None of these dates is a surprise.

Even so, by mid-year 45% of directors had not verified their identity. Verification is free and takes a few minutes. So the problem is not the rules, but putting things off.

I understand this from my own experience. Anyone running a small business fights fires every day: clients, invoices, staff. An official letter with a distant deadline always loses out to today’s job. But in the UK being late costs money: a block on the register, a penalty, lost trust from the bank and business partners.

So I suggest a simple rule. Once a month, set aside an hour for your company’s official matters. Check the deadlines, do what can be done straight away and put the rest in your calendar. At THE BUSINESS TIME we will publish a business calendar every evening, so nobody has to hunt for these dates alone.

Rules in the UK are often simpler than in Poland. You just have to be on time.
