Poland beats Germany to host a Patriot missile service centre, but the location is not yet known

Poland will get a service centre for the latest PAC-3 MSE missiles for the Patriot system. The government announced the successful talks on 27 October, and the defence minister calls it the first step towards producing Patriots in the country. The location and construction timetable have not yet been set.

Poland will have a service centre for PAC-3 MSE missiles, the latest interceptors for the Patriot air defence system. The Chancellery of the Prime Minister announced the successful talks on 27 October. Prime Minister Donald Tusk had said earlier that he expected a positive outcome.

According to the daily Rzeczpospolita, Poland won the investment in competition with Germany. The decision was announced by Deputy Defence Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz described the centre as the first stage towards producing Patriots in Poland.

It is not yet known where the centre will be built or when it will start operating. The minister speaks of many months of work: a site must be chosen, a plan adopted and building permits obtained. Today these missiles are serviced in the US by Lockheed Martin.

PAC-3 MSE missiles need servicing roughly every 10 years. Each one costs more than $5 million, or about 20 million zł. Poland has ordered around 800 of them in total. Most of the 200 missiles under the 2018 contract for the first two Patriot batteries have already been delivered. Work on the next order, three times larger, has not yet begun.

What it means for Poles in the UK

On the same day, the UK and Poland announced the Warsaw Defence Plan, focusing on air defence, drones and the defence industry. The Patriot centre shows that Poland is becoming an important location for the defence industry in Europe. For Polish businesses in the UK working with the defence sector, logistics or IT, it is a signal that ties between the two countries in this industry will grow.

Our assessment

The decision is good news, but it is only the beginning. Without a location and timetable, it is hard to talk about jobs or contracts for Polish firms. We will see real effects in a year or more at the earliest.
