Artificial intelligence in the newsroom – guidelines
BUSINESS TIME™Publisher: ARGONAUTS MEDIA GROUP LIMITED · London · Gdynia · Warsaw
THE BUSINESS TIME is a newspaper that openly uses artificial intelligence. We do not hide it – we say clearly what we use it for, who is responsible for the content and how we ensure accuracy. These rules apply to everyone who makes our newspaper.
1. The publisher is responsible
The publisher – ARGONAUTS MEDIA GROUP LIMITED – and THE BUSINESS TIME newsroom are responsible for every text, graphic and recording on this site. An AI tool is not an author in the legal sense, nor an excuse for an error. Texts signed “TBT Newsroom” are produced according to rules set and supervised by the publisher.
2. What we use AI for
- searching for and organising information from official sources (gov.uk, ONS, GUS, NBP, Bank of England and others),
- preparing news texts, summaries and calendars for businesses – always with a list of sources below the text,
- translations from English into plain Polish,
- calculations and information graphics (charts, diagrams) – labelled as newsroom work,
- audio versions of articles (speech synthesis) and accessibility features,
- initial moderation of comments – a human makes the final decision on removal.
3. We check facts against sources
Every figure, date and quote must have a source, which we give below the text so you can check it yourself. We do not publish rumours or “leaks”. Speculation and opinion are clearly labelled, and newsroom commentary is kept separate from facts. Newsroom estimates are described with the word “estimate”, and we show how we calculated them.
4. What AI does not do here
- it does not create fake images of people or events – photos come from photo libraries (e.g. Pexels) and are described as illustrative,
- it does not impersonate real people or invent quotes,
- it does not independently publish investigations or texts about specific people – these are approved by the publisher, and the people described get a right of reply,
- it does not process readers’ personal data for profiling or advertising.
5. Legal compliance
We act in line with the transparency rules for AI-generated content (the EU Artificial Intelligence Act – AI Act), data protection law (GDPR / UK GDPR) and press law. Data protection details: Privacy policy and Cookie policy.
6. We correct errors quickly and openly
If you find an error, write to: [email protected]. Corrections are marked in the text (“Update” with date and time). People and companies we write about have a right of reply – we publish it in full.
7. We will keep developing these rules
Technology changes quickly. We review these guidelines regularly and welcome your views – write to [email protected].
