On Tuesday 3 November 2026 Americans vote in the midterm elections to Congress. In a BBC News explainer, analysts set out what is at stake, which states to watch – Maine, Michigan and Texas – and what legal challenges to the results may arise. Below is the BBC recording (in English).
What it means for you and your family
The midterms decide who will control the House of Representatives and part of the Senate for the next two years – and therefore how easily the president can carry out his plans on trade, tariffs and foreign policy. For Europe this bears on support for Ukraine and the security of the region, including Poland. We present both sides without taking either; a fuller overview is in our World section.
For your wallet the effects may be more down-to-earth: US election results affect market sentiment and therefore exchange rates. If you send money to Poland or deal with partners in dollars or euros, watch the rate over the coming days before a larger transfer.
The risk
Election night is a harvest for false information – manipulated clips and “sensational” results posted before the official count. Rely on established newsrooms and official announcements, not on screenshots from social media.
