Overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, as results of the US midterm elections came in, the price of bitcoin briefly fell just below $76,000. According to CoinDesk, by Wednesday morning it had recovered to about $78,300, roughly 1% higher than the day before. The fall coincided with reports that the Democrats were winning a majority in both chambers of Congress.
Analysis
Some investors feared that a Democrat-controlled Congress would slow plans favourable to the crypto industry backed by President Donald Trump. As the result became clearer, uncertainty eased and the price bounced back. Analysts quoted by CoinDesk note that divided government in the US usually means fewer abrupt changes to the law. At the same time, about $515m flowed out of US bitcoin ETFs in October, and roughly the same amount in the first two days of November. That points to weaker demand.
What it means
One night showed how quickly cryptocurrencies react to politics. A fall of a few per cent and a rebound within hours is normal for bitcoin. Nobody knows which way the price will go in the coming weeks – analysts’ forecasts differ.
Risk
On days like these there are more adverts and messages saying “buy now before it’s too late” or “guaranteed profit”. This is a typical scam tactic. In the UK most crypto firms must be registered with the FCA – no registration is a serious warning sign.
What to do
- Don’t make decisions based on one night in the market – watch and wait.
- Don’t invest money you could not afford to lose.
- Check the firm on the FCA Financial Services Register before paying in.
- Don’t reply to messages offering “sure profits” and never give anyone your wallet codes.
