News
The Prime Minister’s Office (10 Downing Street) published a readout on 3 November 2026 of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s meeting with Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama. The talks took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
According to the readout, the leaders discussed the Ghanaian community in the UK, the Commonwealth’s role in driving growth, debt service costs for smaller and developing nations, and the UK–Ghana growth partnership signed earlier this year.
Analysis
The Prime Minister proposed a structured dialogue with partners and communities affected by the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. President Mahama welcomed the initiative. African and Caribbean countries have raised this issue in the Commonwealth for years.
The second key theme was Russia’s war against Ukraine. Both leaders voiced concern that Russian job offers are drawing young Africans into military training and onto the front line. They called for a ceasefire and meaningful peace talks.
The Prime Minister also welcomed Ghana’s upcoming chairmanship of the African Union and said he looked forward to working together during the UK’s G20 Presidency.
What it means
London wants to reset its relations with Commonwealth countries – not only politically, but also on the economy and debt. The readout gives no amounts and no new agreements. It signals a direction, not finished decisions.
Risk
The issue of Russia recruiting young people shows that fake job offers abroad are a real danger. Similar adverts – “well-paid work in Russia”, “security guard contract” – also circulate online in Polish.
What to do
- Do not respond to job adverts for work in Russia or in occupied territories, even if they promise a high salary.
- If someone close to you has received such an offer, talk calmly and check the employer in official registers.
- Follow official government announcements on GOV.UK – details of new initiatives are yet to be published.
How to read this
This is a meeting readout, not an agreement. Concrete decisions – for example on debt or the dialogue on slavery – are still to come. We will keep watching.
