News

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is taking part in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St John’s, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda. The summit runs from 1 to 4 November 2026 and brings together 56 countries. This year’s theme is accelerating partnerships and investment.

On 3 November Downing Street published a readout of the Prime Minister’s meeting with Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, held on 2 November.

Analysis

According to the readout, the talks covered three issues. The first was climate – Barbados is among the countries most exposed to rising sea levels and extreme heat. The second was the debt of developing countries – the UK wants to reset international rules on debt during its G20 presidency next year. The third was next steps in the UK’s offer of a dialogue with communities affected by the transatlantic slave trade. The leaders agreed to speak further during the summit.

What it means

The Commonwealth is made up of former British territories and other countries that cooperate voluntarily. The summit does not make law in the UK. It does, however, show the direction the government wants to take in foreign policy – including ahead of its G20 presidency.

Risk

For Poles in the UK the summit changes nothing in daily matters today – work, taxes or benefits. The final joint communiqué is not yet known. We need to watch, wait and not believe “certain” information circulating online without a source.

What to do

  • Look for information on government decisions on GOV.UK, not in anonymous posts.
  • If your business trades with Commonwealth countries, follow announcements after the summit ends.
  • You do not need to do anything – the summit does not change your obligations.

How to read this

A Downing Street readout is an official summary of a meeting prepared by the government. It does not contain the full content of the talks. We will report on the summit’s outcome once a joint statement is published.
