Wetherspoon: pub sales up 8.2%. Growth slightly slower in recent weeks

Pub chain J D Wetherspoon said on Wednesday that like-for-like sales rose 8.2% in the 14 weeks to 1 November. In the latest five weeks growth slowed to 7.5%. The company is sticking to its outlook, but the chairman warns that profit depends on future sales.

News

Pub chain J D Wetherspoon published an update on the start of its new financial year on Wednesday 4 November. In the 14 weeks to 1 November, like-for-like sales (in pubs that were also trading a year earlier) rose by 8.2%.

Growth was uneven, however. In the latest five weeks it was 7.5%, compared with 8.6% in the nine weeks before. The company said it was comfortable with current market expectations for the full year.

Analysis

Analysts whose forecasts were compiled by the company expect profit of £76.4 million in the 2027 financial year. That year will have 53 weeks. By comparison, adjusted profit in 2026 was £77.7 million.

Chairman Tim Martin said the company had made a good start to the year. He added, however, that profit forecasts are “very dependent on the level of sales growth”, with three quarters of the year still to go.

What it means

People are still going to the pub despite the rising cost of living. Wetherspoon is known for low prices, so some customers may choose it over more expensive venues. The slight slowdown in recent weeks is a sign that wallets are more cautious. On Thursday 5 November the Bank of England will announce its interest rate decision – this will also affect how much money people have left for going out.

Risk

For now there is no reason for alarm. The company has not announced job cuts or pub closures. The hospitality sector is, however, sensitive to energy, wage and tax costs. If sales slow further, businesses in the sector may cut working hours. We need to watch the next figures and be careful with plans.

What to do

  • Work in hospitality? Check your contract and rota – you have the right to written terms of employment.
  • Run a café or pub? Compare your results with the same weeks last year – that is how Wetherspoon counts it.
  • Hold shares or a fund? Do not make decisions based on one announcement – look at a longer period.
  • Follow Thursday’s Bank of England decision – it may change borrowing costs.

How to read this

Like-for-like sales exclude newly opened pubs, so they best show whether customers are spending more in the same places. This is a quarterly result, not an annual one – the full picture can only be judged after the whole year.
