AI to make websites easier to use for blind people and people with dyslexia. Start-up wins £300,000

British start-up BrowsAble has received £300,000, including an Innovate UK grant, for an AI-based tool. It is designed to reorganise website content so that people with visual impairments, dyslexia, autism or ADHD can use it more easily. A market launch is planned for 2027.

News

BrowsAble, a start-up founded by Altrincham entrepreneur Peter Wrenshall, has received £300,000 to develop an AI-based tool. According to BusinessCloud, the sum consists of a £150,000 Innovate UK grant and a matching investment from Manchester-based EHE Group, under Innovate UK’s investor partnerships programme.

Analysis

The tool is designed to recognise and reorganise content on any website without separate configuration for each site. It is to work as a browser extension for users and as a script installed on company websites. It is to be free for users – the cost is to be borne by website owners. Its target users include people with visual impairments, dyslexia, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities and older people. The founder says “every website works differently” and that this is a daily barrier.

What it means

This is an early stage – the product is due to reach the market in 2027, first as a test version. It is not yet known how well it will work in practice.

Risk

Browser extensions can access everything you see on web pages. This applies to any tool, not just this one. Only install extensions from official stores and from known developers.

What to do

  • If you find it hard to read websites, check the built-in accessibility features on your phone and computer (zoom, screen reader, reading mode).
  • Businesses: check whether your website meets accessibility standards – it means a bigger group of customers.
  • Before installing an extension, read which data it asks to access.
