Germany: "Gen Z regelt" – protests today in more than 30 cities. What is happening and what it is about

Dziś, 31 October, „Gen Z regelt” protestuje w ponad 30 miastach, organizatorzy mówią o ponad 160 tys. uczestników. Chodzi o edukację, koszty życia i pobór do wojska.

The youth initiative “Gen Z regelt” has announced demonstrations on 31 October in solidarity with French school students. Official marches will take place in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich, with more in 16 other cities. Almost 30,000 people have signed up.
Demands
Young people are demanding action from the CDU/CSU–SPD government on six issues: underfunded schools and cuts, the rising cost of living, unfair burden-sharing, an end to military conscription, a halt to expanded surveillance and immediate climate action. They argue that cuts in education and health hit young people while billions go on defence.
Police
The head of the GdP police union, Andreas Roßkopf, announced a vigilant and calm approach, but also a firm and decisive response to any attempt at violence. The organisers say they oppose violence against people and property. Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck announced a strong police presence in Frankfurt, where the organisers expect about 1,700 participants.
