Mike Townsend – part 3

Thought leadership · Mike Townsend

Think circular. Build better.

In the final article of his three-part series, Mike Townsend explains why reaching net zero takes more than incremental improvements. Find out how adopting circular economy principles can help construction companies lower costs, strengthen supply chains, open new revenue streams and build long-term resilience. The biggest gains will go to organisations that rethink traditional models, collaborate across the value chain and start transforming today.

Thought leadership series: rethinking sustainability

The sustainability bubble has deflated – recent political and regulatory changes in Brussels, London and Washington have slowed momentum and weakened key regulatory frameworks. But this pause gives businesses a chance to reset their approach and focus on long-term, commercially viable models.

We invited leading sustainability consultants Mike Townsend and John Barcroft, together with Michael O’Hara and Gerard Clutterbuck of Techies Go Green, to share their views on the future of sustainability from a business and economic perspective. In the videos, Mike Townsend, CEO of Earthshine Group, talks to Techies Go Green about each part of his three-part series.

Is it time to rethink net zero? Part 2: Reimagining construction – for impact and commercial advantage

Last time we confronted the climate reality and the need to look beyond the noise of the culture wars. The crisis is real. The cost of inaction is devastating. Although smart money is still being invested, we are not cutting emissions deeply or quickly enough. Incremental change is not working. We need to rethink net zero strategies to deliver rapid transformation – in every business, economy and society.

We need to move from “Dire Straits” to electrostates

Disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has triggered a new rise in global energy prices. Businesses and households are struggling with rising costs and supply uncertainty. This latest crisis is not only squeezing margins – it exposes a deeper structural problem. The fossil-fuel-based global energy model on which economic growth has rested for decades is increasingly unfit for purpose. With each cycle of supply shock and recovery, the urgency grows for countries to move from being passive customers of petrostates to proactive, self-sufficient and climate-friendly electrostates.

Is it time to rethink net zero? Part 1: Beyond the noise of the culture wars!

We are in the middle of a climate crisis – a huge challenge for which we have limited time. Incremental change is not working; we need radical solutions that deliver transformative results if we are to keep a liveable planet and shared prosperity. Meanwhile, the culture wars pose a clear and present danger: they undermine an effective transition to a low-carbon economy and deepen climate breakdown.

From “doing” sustainability to being sustainable – a guide for business leaders

In 2025 the sustainability bubble burst, or at least deflated significantly. Regulatory and political changes in Brussels and Washington slowed momentum: the acceleration provided by the EU’s CSRD was sharply weakened, and the froth in the sustainability market was blown away by pushback from interest groups and a political shift to the right.

Direct air capture of CO₂ in a new light

Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology has passed the point where it can be dismissed as impractical or prohibitively expensive. But it is worth being clear about what DAC is not. It is not a licence to keep emitting. It is not a reason to slow the clean energy transition. And on its own it will not reverse the trajectory of atmospheric CO₂. In truth, no single technology will. DAC can, however, act as a key part of an integrated approach that combines decisive emission cuts with active carbon removal and treats captured CO₂ as a resource, not a problem.

What did we learn from COP30?

Another COP has come to an end with very few decisions made. Sadly, for the first time in COP history the United States sent no representative, while China had the second-largest delegation – after host Brazil – with 789 delegates.

Re-Therm – thermal energy storage

New in our Green Tech Focus video series

Industrial process heat accounts for almost a fifth of all global greenhouse gas emissions – as much as the US and India combined! It is a particularly hard source of emissions to cut, because it requires very high temperatures, usually achieved by burning fossil fuels.

In this episode of Green Tech Focus we talk to Re-Therm founder and CEO Paul Keane about their remarkably compact, modular “plug and play” solution designed to replace the fossil fuels currently used to produce industrial process heat. Paul explains that their solution is built inside a standard shipping container. This self-contained system heats its thermal mass to over 1,200 degrees Celsius using off-peak electricity and renewable power that would otherwise be curtailed. It connects easily to a standard process heat manifold and integrates with existing heat control systems with minimal changes. Paul adds that each storage module can take up as little space as a single parking bay, and modules can be connected in series to increase storage capacity – each adding 5 MWh.

THE BUSINESS TIME’s role

Action Green is an expert magazine – in English. As a Techies Go Green partner and signatory, we bring this knowledge to the Polish business community in the UK: we choose the texts most important for Polish businesses and discuss them in Polish in THE BUSINESS TIME, always crediting the author and linking to the original.

We pay particular attention to topics that directly concern sectors where many Poles in the UK work: circular construction, energy prices, financing solar PV, battery storage and electric fleets.

We encourage Polish companies implementing interesting solutions to get in touch – we can pitch their story to the Action Green editors.
