News
The Met Office expects cloudy and damp weather at the end of the week. On Thursday 5 November, Bonfire Night, there will be variable cloud, the odd brighter spell and drizzly showers, mostly in the northeast. Temperatures will be near average for the time of year, but it will feel cooler on breezy eastern coasts.
Friday 6 November will be another cloudy day, with showers mainly in the southwest. Saturday 7 November brings a mix of brighter spells, rain and showers. On Sunday 8 November – Remembrance Sunday – it should be sunnier in the south. Where skies clear overnight, fog and frost may form. The Met Office’s Wednesday forecast listed no weather warnings.
What it means
Firework displays and bonfires on Thursday evening are likely to go ahead, but expect damp and chilly conditions. On Sunday, during ceremonies at war memorials, the weather looks better in the south. Drivers should watch out for morning fog and frosty windscreens.
Why it is happening
High pressure over the UK is bringing plenty of cloud and little rain. According to the long-range outlook, from Monday 9 November the high is expected to move east, letting weather fronts push in from the southwest. The south may turn milder and wetter, the north is more likely to stay drier.
Risks
- Morning fog and frost – poorer visibility and slippery roads.
- Wet grass and cold at bonfires – risk of slips and getting chilled, especially for children and older people.
- Colder air with wintry showers in the north is possible late next week – but this is very uncertain.
What could happen next
Forecasts for the coming days may change. The Met Office stresses that the colder spell is uncertain. Keep an eye on the latest forecasts and any warnings.
What to do
- Dress warmly and take something waterproof to a firework display.
- Allow extra time for morning journeys and clear your car windows.
- Check the latest forecast and warnings on the Met Office website or app.
- Look in on older neighbours – cold nights are a good moment to ask if they need anything.
